This is the "web site" for the Sun Mountain 50k and 25k and 10k and Chickadee 1k trail races. Located on the east (read sunny) side of the North Cascades on the edge of the Chelan Sawtooth Wildereness above the Methow River Valley these courses offer great mountain trail running early in the year. Year round the sun shines an average of 5 out of 7 days in the Methow Valley and for race day (historiacally speaking) there's only a 20% chance of rain compared to 60% in Seattle or 80% in Olympia or Portland! In partnership with MVSTA and Sun Mountain Lodge we're proud to bring you the first and finest ultra in the Methow Valley.
We think this will be a relatively fast course with times probably similar to Chuckanut 50k or Baker Lake 50k but probably not as fast as Way Too Cool 50k.
As a benefit for The Partnership for a Sustainable Methow atleast $5 will be donated by Rainshadow Running for each runner.

The start times are: 7:45am for the 1k and 8:00am for all others. no early start for any distance.
Sorry Teresa. the order has already been placed.
first timer here... is the course marked or do we study/bring a map? Thanks!
The course will be well marked and a map should not be nessecary but they don't weigh much so it wouldn't hurt to have one (and the course description)just in case. i will have maps on the blogsite soon and both MVSTA and Greentrails make excellent maps of the sun mountain area.
First let me state I will run in snow, however, will to much snow cancel race?
it's is extremely unlikey that the race would be cancelled for any reason. there is snow but i really doubt that it would cancel the race. most of the course is actually very runnable right now despite the snow. thanks to MVSTA and their grooming the majority of the trails have a wide and solid base of packed snow with very little ice. so the running is very good on those trails right now(i checked out a couple sections this morning) also some of the snowshoe trails are very good to run on too. obviously it would be great for all the snow to just instantly disappear but that doen't seem likely. instead what i'm guessing is that we'll have a mix of good previously groomed snow covered trails, good snowshoe trails, some crappy soft(melting) snow covered trails, and some bare ground. the course may have to be altered but like i said it's very unlikely the race will be canceled.
Great!!Looking forward to the event. Didn't want a little snow to cancel my first Ultra and first visit to the Methow. Thanks so much for offering this event.

Anyone interested in splitting a room at Sun Mountain Lodge for Friday night? I would be interested in splitting with people that already have a reservation, too. I also would sleep on the floor/camping pad.
Let me know!

This will be my 2nd 25k. The 1st being the wintery Fat Ass run 2 years ago. This is how ever my running partners first 25k. So excited.
James - Great job to you, Dave and Glenn for working to make the trail runnable. Glenn's pics are nice. Let's make the first inaugural race one to remember!
James, Alison, Glen, and et al trail helpers.
Thank you so very much for a fantastic event. The work that you all did on the course with the snow and ice was a tremendous effort and I am certain saved from any injuries. The course was very well marked, wonderfully stocked and perfectly placed aid stations, and not to forget the pizza and beer. My very most appreciation. See ya all at Cle Elum!

Will this race be held in 2010?
The Sun Mountain Races will most likely happen again in 2010. the date has not been set yet but will either be in the summer or fall instead of april-- 4th saturday in october is currently the most likely date but nothing has be confirmed yet. in october i hope to set the Rainshadow Running race calendar for 2010 which will hopefully contain all the old favorites and a few new really exciting races!
